Scouts ACT is excited to offer our popular 4WD/ AWD Safe & Trained Participant Course. The course is available to all youth members and leaders with a minimum of a Learner's Permit and 20 hours driving experience.
The course is designed for people with limited skills in operating an AWD/4WD. It aims to help Scouting members to operate AWD/4WD vehicles on unsealed roads and enable them to acquire the Scouts AWD/ 4WD Safe & Trained Participant proficiency.
Participants can also use the training outcomes towards being assessed for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for V.E.T. units through SAIT.
Course dates are Sat 8 – Sun 9 November 2025 at Mulga Scout Hall in Richardson and in the Brindabellas. Start 8:30am on Sat, finish ~4.00pm on Sun.
Morning and afternoon tea will be provided. Participants are to bring their own lunch. This is a non-residential course.
The course includes all training materials, and a contribution towards maintaining our equipment, at a cost of $90 per person.
There are some prerequisites:
1. You must bring your own registered 4WD/ AWD vehicle with any recovery gear you normally take on trips e.g. snatch straps, tow straps, recovery points, safety gear, winch (preferred but not essential).
2. Note that AWD vehicles are not expected to have the same level of gear as a 4WD.
3. You must be licensed to drive the vehicle or, if on a learner's permit, have a fully licensed driver with you.
4. You must be a current member of Scouts ACT or Scouts NSW.
5. This is a beginner’s course, so your keenness to learn is essential!
The Course is led by experienced persons from the Scouts ACT 4WD Team.
The broad outline for the course:
• Saturday: mix of theory and practical training sessions.
• Sunday: practical driving session. The exact route will depend on driver experience, weather and environmental conditions.
A workbook is required to be completed and submitted.
